We were interested to write this Toluna review as we’d heard of them for years but never actually joined.
There’s no doubt that Toluna is one of the biggest names in online paid surveys.
They boast nearly 10 million users and have been offering paid survey opportunities since the year 2000 but are they still at the front of the survey company pack? No.
They’re a solid choice for a portfolio of survey sites but they shouldn’t be your top pick and here’s why.
Toluna was founded in Paris back in the year 2000 and they have a large global network of brands and companies to draw on when it puts together its surveys and portfolios.
Because they have a huge number of users – brands like to work with them because they can always put together a representative sample of their audience.
Users like using Toluna because this makes them feel like their input matters. The chance to feedback to big companies on their offerings is exciting.
The Sign Up Process With Toluna
Not only is the signup process free with Toluna but they give your account a little points head start just for joining (500 points bonus). It’s very straightforward to, though there is a bit of a sifting system that means that signup is not as quick as it could be.
How Can You Earn With Toluna?
Toluna, unlike many other survey companies, remains a relatively “purist” option and they only payout for surveys and for “mini-polls” as well as referring friends.
This is something of a drawback as it means you can be waiting much longer for that last survey before a payout than you would on other sites, where you might be able to get paid out for browsing the internet for an hour or so, instead.
They do offer some really community features that are a lot of fun to interact with and the app they provide is solid but none of these things get you paid any faster or earn you any more points and that’s disappointing.
How Do You Get Paid?
This is where Toluna really falls down. It’s not that you won’t get paid or that you can’t get paid – they wouldn’t have 10 million members if that was the case. It’s that you might be waiting a long time to get paid.
They require you to cash in 30,000 reward points to pick up a gift card and while they have a wide-range of cards to choose from – 30,000 points is only worth $10. That’s twice the level required to get a payout than with most other survey companies.
It gets worse too, Toluna only pays in cash when you hit 95,000 points and that’s only worth $30 via PayPal. That’s roughly 3-6 times what most sites ask for to pay out in cash.
You can also enter sweepstakes on the Toluna site with 500 points per ticket and you can win 1,000,000 points in return. That doesn’t feel like a huge incentive either, though.
And to add insult to injury – you need to wait up to 8 weeks for a gift card of PayPal payout according to their t’s and c’s. We admit that in our experience it only takes a couple of weeks but when other survey sites pay instantly, that’s a lot longer than it needs to take.
Toluna is a reputable survey site and it is categorically not a scam.
However, there are easier ways to earn money via surveys and nearly all survey sites are going to pay out faster than Toluna will.
That doesn’t mean you should avoid signing up with Toluna, but it does mean that you shouldn’t make it your primary choice of survey site.
